thing(ing) through clay

The course is designed to introduce how material –particularly clay- can function as
conceptual thinking tool rather than a traditional medium. While adopting Lambros
Malafouris’ term thinging, the course revolves around ongoing transdisciplinary themes and
approaches in the practice of contemporary arts too. Malafouris claims that things actively participate in human cognitive life that we think “with” and “through” things, not simply “about” things. For this reason, thinking is better described as thinging where the tangled relation between artistic process and artwork is pointed out.

The experimental format of the course serves to replace the craft based technical
demonstrations, and refers the metaphoric potential of materiality and process.
